Papers, 1855-1870.

This collection of papers contains copies of letters written in 1867 to prominent U.S. government officials recommending Franklin Blake for a consulship in Japan. Included are copies of letters of introduction for James Blake to aid in securing the position for his brother. The collection also includes gas-cooking patents of James Barnard Blake and documents concerning his appointment as a justice of the peace and announcing his election as mayor of Worcester, as well as drafts of speeches given before the Montacute Lodge of Masons.

Franklin Blake (1837-1871) was the son of James and Mary Clap Blake, and the brother of James Barnard Blake (1827-1870), mayor of Worcester, Mass. from 1865 to 1870. James Barnard Blake (1827-1870), son of James and Mary (Clap) Blake, was educated in the public schools of Boston and at Chauncey Hall, a private school in Boston. At the age of eighteen, he began to study engineering in his uncle's firm, Blake & Darracott, and was associated with the firm for six years. In January, 1852, he became Superintendent of the Worcester Gas Light Company and held that position until his death, which resulted from an explosion at the gas works in December, 1870. Bla...
